WhisperPicks: The Ten Best Biker Jackets For Spring Summer 2011

Whispered by The Clothes Whisperer

Listen up ladies: tough luxe, as a genre of dress or zeitgeist, as it were, is here to stay. And the good news is, if your palms are itching for that perfect transitional purchase, the biker jacket du jour is here to save the day. I live in the things, in fact, my obsession with biker jackets looks to be to my mid-twenties what premium denim fiendish-collection was to my college years. I am so addicted to finding the perfect motorcycle jacket, fringed or unfringed, cropped or oversized, I LOVE THEM ALL.
An item which season after season, decade after decade, has proved its timelessness, as the model off duty/grunge look only gains in mainstream momentum, if you don't have a biker or two stashed in your closet already, now, my friends, is the time to start your leather-purchasing engines.

Because many of the more nuanced versions (classic black ain't never gonna go to sale) have been marked down. And as the sales begin to peter out, now is your moment to invest in that key biker that you can layer for the next few months with knitwear and fur gilets and then whip out as one of your go-to-statement pieces when spring finally arrives. So here's a look at a few runway-inspired updates to the classic biker (from the current SS11 runway) recreated with shopstock available either now or already in the sales! Whoever said you can't create next season's trends with last season's good has clearly never been anywhere near a spiked Balmain biker jacket lurking in wait at the end of the Liberty sale. To get the studded look, you can always just take a stud gun to a vintage or plain old leather bomber that's just gotten boring...

The cropped and quilted, sort of dirt biker jacket is a great update for SS11. The crop works brilliantly with a flowing maxi or, if you've got the tummy for it, a little crop top or bikini top (bikers make the coolest nonchalant beach cover ups, must have the Vespa to match!). In the winter, layer over a chunky knit or a turtleneck to keep your midsection warm!

Sleeveless is another key adjustment to the biker for spring. Obviously, leather can get a bit toasty in the warmer weather, so gilets keep the look edgy and cool but allow for your arms to breathe. Layer over a denim jacket in early springtime days for an 80's cool look, or pair with silk slip, as per Peter Pilotto and Hader Ackerman above for a dress down take on evening elegance.

The last update for SS11 re the biker comes in the form of splashes of color, red and orange in particular. If you've already got black, brown and cream at home and are a little bolder than most in your average choices, play with a colored motorcycle jacket this spring. Layer over printed cottons and other primary colors like yellows and blues.

The Top Ten To Take You to SS11

1) Rick Owens Blister washed-leather biker jacket

It doesn't get anymore classic cool biker than Rick Owens, the god of the fitted, asymmetrical collar slouchy leather jacket. This pearl washed-leather funnel-neck biker jacket has a textured finish and a partially concealed asymmetric zip through front. The jacket is light-weight, has long sleeves with ribbed wool inserts, three zip-fastening front welt pockets, seam and stitch detail, button-fastening pockets at interior and is partially lined. Pair with lightwash wideleg jeans in early April and layer with loads of sheer neutrals.

2) Isabel Marant Keni leather biker jacket

Isabel Marant, the queen of Parisian cool, it's no wonder she's designed the near perfect motorcycle jacket. Boasting gunmetal hardware, push-stud fastening epaulets, concealed asymmetric fastening at front, long sleeves with zip-fastening cuffs, a round neck, slanted zip pockets at front, elbow patches, this little number is fully lined in anthracite silk-satin. The price may hurt, but this is one you'll have for life, I can only imagine how divinely supple the leather will become over the years...yummmmm

3) Pringle 1815 Knitted-sleeve wool-blend jacket

Another fun little number, this knitted Pringle jacket is a spring piece, not so much summer. Great for transitions, he can usurp the place of your favorite hoody, and worn as either a cardigan or a jacket.

4) Burberry Quilted leather biker jacket

So beautiful it's pretty much art (there is a pile of drool accumulating atop my keyboard I as I type). This Burberry jacket has an oversized collar and notched lapels, long sleeves, zip-fastening cuffs, slanted zipped pockets at front, an exposed silver asymmetric zip fastening through front and is fully lined.

5) Balenciaga Green Asymmetrical Zip

This Balenciaga is for the slightly more experienced biker-babe--the girl who already has all the basics covered, is slightly addicted and is fashion forward enough to rock this slightly strange green hue.

6) Matthew Williamson Cropped Biker Jacket

Love Love Love Matthew Williamson's biker offering in a pretty coral hue. Layer with chocolate brown and black knits for now (wideleg camel Chloe trousers, anyone??) and then pair with pretty printed frocks and denim cut off's and tees with espadrilles in the spring. Pretty as a peach.

7) Rag n' Bone Worn-look leather jacket

This worn-look leather biker jacket may be a leftover from SS10, but the distressed look is still in and Rag N' Bone's designs have a much longer shelf life than that! Enter the massive discount, almost 1/4 the price, this is one of my top picks of the list. I adore the steely tone and the belt detail, I can practically feel the treated lambskin between my fingers now...

8) Joseph Perfeto Leather Jacket

If you're looking to add some color to your jacket collection, you can't go wrong with this red leather biker jacket from Joseph. With that vintage already-worn in feel, it's just the classic jacket dunked in the color red.

9) L'Agence Wool-blend biker jacket

Another jacket primed for transition time, and summers too if you're a lucky lucky Londoner. This L'Agence jacket has a peaked collar, asymmetric zip through center, zipped long sleeves, zipped diagonal front pockets, a buckle-fastening belt and is fully lined. The picture of effortless cool, this jacket cries out to be teamed with some fierce black boots and dark wash jeans

10) Lot78 Ziggy shearling and leather biker jacket

Black vintage leather biker jacket with full shearling lining, this Lot78 jacket has long sleeves with gunmetal zips, a short collar with press-stud fastening, a zip to fasten at front, two buckles at each side, three front zip pockets and stitch detailing at back. Effortlessly stylish and inimitably cool, Lot78's shearling-lined black vintage leather jacket is a winter wardrobe essential, and will carry you through the chilly evenings of early spring. Aviator shearling was massive this Fall, and I don't see too many of the Burberrites who invested in the mother of all shearlings dumping their pilot gear just because a new season has come round. That's a long winded way of saying that I'm betting the trend will carry through to next season (just look at all the shearling at the mens' shows!), so investing in a key piece while it's 50% off in the off season is a shrewd move.
