2nd Day - First Love

Ever since I spotted a little black dress from a great distance in John Lewis, tried it on and subsequently justified it to my wallet some three years ago, I have been utterly in love with the Danish brand DAY, Birger et Mikkelsen.

2nd Day - First Love

Ever since I spotted a little black dress from a great distance in John Lewis, tried it on and subsequently justified it to my wallet some three years ago, I have been utterly in love with the Danish brand DAY, Birger et Mikkelsen.

It’s my own personal perfect mix of cool, everyday luxe and utter wearability at an affordable mid-range price point.

Net-A-Porter sum up the concept perfectly: “…a uniquely Scandinavian, functional aesthetic with vintage-inspired glamour and playful innovation.” I defy you to check out their current selection and not fall for at least two pieces. So when Matches recently announced the arrival of the spin-off label, 2nd Day and I saw what’s on offer I literally clapped my hands together in sheer glee.

Matches lists 2nd Day as the younger, more contemporary element of DAY, Birger et Mikkelsen, inspired by urban minimalism; artistic and feminine with a cool-girl edge. Yes please to all of that but I was also hooked at the sight of sequins, tailoring, faux fur… and a cape. Not to mention the ankle boots and scrunched down socks used to style some of the looks.

I adore the lookbook shots and video but do realise that it helps a great deal that the model is absolutely stunning…. and approximately half my age. In order to verify the wearability for us mere mortals, here’s what I’d team some of my favourite 2nd Day pieces with.

Knitted cream stripe jumper – £36 Topshop 2nd Day sequin embellished skirt – £159 Matches Carvela Scatter ankle boots – £160 Kurt Geiger Tan tab through satchel – £65 Dorothy Perkins

One of my current obsessions and perfect for fitting in with the AW11 metallics trend is sequins for day. Add in stripes and ankle boots and I’m happier than Bradshaw in Blahniks. Admittedly this is more me for a meeting in London than me at the school gates but a definite killer combination nonetheless.

2nd Day tweed jacket – £269 Matches Moto vintage wash Martha jeans – £40 Topshop Reiss silk shirt – £88 John Lewis Envelope clutch – £165 Isabella Oliver 365 Collection Taupe heeled biker boots – £45 Dorothy Perkins

If you fancy a little heritage in your wardrobe this winter, opt for this structured tweed jacket. Over jeans, a shirt and biker boots this look would cut a tough tweed dash at the village local for Sunday lunch!

2nd Day ginger crepe collarless top – £139 Matches 2nd Day leather mini skirt – £229 Matches 2nd Day Carla Mongolian shaggy fur gilet – £499 Matches Belle peep toe heel – £75 Dune Black pleated tote – £95 Topshop

Admittedly there isn’t much mixing here – this is my version of an Olivia Palermo style homage to 2nd Day. I literally want it all… a new Day is definitely dawning…
